A day of inspirational teaching, encouragement and fun. Learn the basics of hand spinning, right from choosing a fleece to setting the yarn. By the end of the day you will have proudly spun and plied your very own yarn which you will be able to use in a small project.

Now that you have mastered the basics of spinning you will soon want to be able to produce a wider variety of yarns.


On this one day course you will discover new techniques for spinning yarns from fine to super-bulky using a variety of natural, luxury and manufactured fibres.


Come for a day of inspirational teaching, encouragement and fun and discover just what a wonderful variety of yarns you can spin for your next knitting, crochet or weaving project.


Syllabus

  • Different types of fibre and fibre preparation
  • Choosing and using fibre preparation tools including drum carder, flick carder and wool combs
  • Drafting techniques – woollen and worsted
  • How to make a balanced yarn – ratios and twist
  • Improving consistency and spinning different yarn weights
  • Designing your own yarn

Spinning with a Spindle – the basics   £90


Covering similar content to "Spinning with a Wheel", this workshop introduces the ancient art of spinning on a spindle with a look at a variety of spindles - including drop spindles, support spindles and floor spindles. We will look at how different spindles produce different yarns and how to get the best out of your spindles.

Accredited Hand Spinning courses

Level 1 Handspinning     £335


Accredited by Agored Cymru (Welsh Awarding Body)       


This unique, accredited and internationally recognised unit of three credits provides a foundation in hand spinning with wool.  The taught element of the course is run over two days up to a month apart. 


In addition to the practical instruction you will receive a comprehensive Learner Guide and a Workbook to complete and full support throughout the course.  There is no exam but the exercises you complete in the Workbook, along with examples of your hand spinning, will demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have gained in order to be awarded the unit.

  • The characteristics and qualities of fleece and how it is washed
  • The principles of spinning with a spinning wheel
  • How to prepare wool for hand spinning
  • How to spin with a spinning wheel
  • How to produce a plied yarn
  • How to finish yarn ready for use

Level 3 Handspinning     £1550


Accredited by Agored Cymru (Welsh Awarding Body)       


This unique, accredited and internationally recognised unit of twelve credits provides a broad and deep study of hand spinning.


The taught element of the course is run over six days around six weeks apart followed by four months to complete spinning and a project assignment.  Along with the practical instruction you will receive a comprehensive Learner Guide as well as a Workbook to complete. There is no formal written examination but the exercises you complete in the Workbook, along with many examples of your hand spinning and the final design and make project, will demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have gained.  


The workbook and practical examples are assessed and on successful completion you are awarded an Agored Cymru certificate.


This is a serious unit of study so be prepared to be challenged, inspired and immersed in hand spinning!
